read-only memory in computing, an electronic
memory device; a computer's permanent store
of vital information or programs. ROM holds
data or programs that will rarely or never
need to be changed but must always be readily
available, for example, a computer's
operating system. It is an integrated circuit
(chip) and its capacity is measured in
kilobytes (thousands of characters). ROM
chips are loaded during manufacture with the
relevant data and programs, which are not
lost when the computer is switched off, as
happens in RAM.
